Maternal and foetal mortality in placenta praevia.

چکیده
As can be seen from Table 1 the reduction in both maternal and foetal mortality in the 16 years since 1945 has been gratifying and to assess the reasons for this improvement a series of 425 cases of confirmed placenta praevia has been critically analyzed. At the same time the opportunity was taken of studying the factors contributing to maternal and foetal deaths to see if any further improvement was possible. These 425 patients comprise all those dealt with in the Royal Maternity Hospital, Belfast, in the 16-year period between 1945-1960. For purposes of comparison and to indicate the trends in treatment, the series has been subdivided into two eight-year periods, 1945-1 952 and 1953-1 960.

Investigation of foetal mortality associated with placenta praevia.
It is well known that a considerable part of the foetal mortality in placenta praevia is attributable to "prematurity", which is usually assessed on the basis of weight. The low weight is at least partly explained by the short gestation, but the possibility that it also results from retardation of foetal growth deserves attention. The decidua of the lower uterine segment is believed to be less ...
متن کاملArteriographic assessment of placental vascularity after antepartum haemorrhage.
During the last decade there has been a gradual shift of emphasis in the management of antepartum haemorrhage. Placenta praevia, dangerous as it may be, presents fewer problems of management since the adoption of conservative therapy and the increased use of caesarean section as advocated by Macafee (1945). Stallworthy (1951) declared that in the management of placenta praevia our aim should be...
متن کاملModern views on the management of placenta praevia.
The treatment of placenta praevia up to recent years has been seriously influenced by the belief that once the complication manifests itself by haemorrhage immediate treatment should be undertaken. This approach to the subject has resulted in a maternal mortality of 5.7 per cent. and a foetal mortality of 50-60 per cent. (Browne and Comyns Berkeley). In a personal series of 275 cases supervised...
متن کاملThe Treatment of Placenta Prævia *Read 14th January 1925.
The communication, which forms the opening paper of this discussion, is based on a study of 279 cases of placenta praevia treated, for the most part, in the Royal Maternity Hospital, Edinburgh. In 25 of the cases the mother died, representing a maternal mortality of 8-9 per cent. Including still-births and neonatal deaths 182 of the children were lost, representing a fetal mortality of 64 per c...
